Our Story

Museum History

The Museo d’Arte Moderna Ugo Carà opened its doors to the public in 2006. The museum is based around a permanent collection of sculptures, drawings, medals and design objects that were donated by the artist to the town of Muggia. Designed by starassociati, the building of the museum commenced in 2002. The building is divided into two main areas, one hosting the permanent collection of Carà’s works, while the other houses temporary exhibitions.

Ugo Carà

Born in Muggia in 1908, Ugo Carà was more than just an artist. His work included ventures into architecture, design, graphics and, maybe most importantly, sculpture. He was well renowned, displaying his work in major exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale, the Milan Triennale, the Quadriennale in Rome, the Turin Quadrennial, the Universal Exhibition in Paris and Brussels, the International Sculpture Exhibition in Carrara, and the Exhibition of Italian Graphics in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Mexico City. His works can be found around the world, in private collections and museums, especially here in Museo d’Arte Moderna Ugo Carà. Between 1949 and 1963, Carà put his efforts into interior design, furnishing ocean liners. His large bronze relief, Il Castigo delle Vergini, The Punishment of the Virgins, dates from this period. From 1956 to 1976 he also taught interior design at the Istituto Statale d’Arte Nordio in Trieste. Before his death in 2004, he donated many of his works to the town of Muggia.

The Website

This website was created in march 2023 by Eisvinas Almanaitis, Niso Cicalò, Viktor Imrišek, Tim Niklas Kettunen, Alvaro Joseph Loste, Teo Sega Sumić, and Nguyen Vinh Bao Tin during their “Project Week” organized by the UWC Adriatic of Duino and titled “Modern Art, Modern Audience: Making Ugo Carà Museum of Modern Art More Visible”. The students spent a week in Muggia studying the real needs of the Carà Museum and talking with the museum curator about creating a website dedicated to the museum in English, Italian, and Slovene.
